the economy's slow growth. the unemployment rate in michigan is over the national average and things look much worse in the detroit metro area. unemployment there is nearing 16%. kristen welker is live for us at the white house. kristen, the president right now on board air force one and is touching down soon. what can we expect to hear from him? >> white house officials say the president will talk about the importance of creating a strong middle class to this economic recovery. he'll also likely challenge democrats and republicans to get behind that big jobs plan that you just mentioned that he's going to roll out on thursday. we don't know specifically what's going to be in the plan, i can tell you a couple of things that have been under consideration including extending payroll tax breaks as well as investing in infrastructure, green energy projects and also providing tax breaks for companies who hire new employees. now the community today that will be listening to the president speak thousands of union workers will of course be listening very closely to his words today and again on thursda

new. here in michigan, obviously, it's been very hard hit in large part because of the auto industry. the white house, clearly, picked the gm headquarters to talk a little bit about the auto bailouts which they believe saved thousands of jobs. and the unemployment rate in this state has dropped. two summers ago it was over 14%. now it's 10.9%. but, obviously, still far worse than the national average, still very dangerous politically for a president who's facing re-election. i should note as well that some of the union officials, the labor crowd, the president also trying to rev up his political operation heading into 2012. the teamster president, jimmy hoffa jr., was speaking a couple moments ago and saying we'll remember in november who's with the working people. he was chiding republicans, specifically named the tea party, and then his language got a lot stronger, and pardon my language as i repeat it. he said of the tea party and republicans, quote, let's take these sons of bitches out. it got some cheers here from the crowd in detroit. megyn: i just want to make sure we understa

the jobs numbers and this city suffering worst than most. unemployment here is at -- well, in michigan it's at 10.9%, but in detroit it's almost at 16%. over 50% are among the long-term unemployed. why does that matter in this is a state that the president won by 17 points. and now his approval rating in the state is at 34%. those are bismol numbers, ted. he has to get the numbers up if he hopes to win re-election. we will see the president here not just today but a lot in the next year as he campaigns for re-election. >> any hint on what he will talk about today and specifically if there will be any sneak peek into what he will deliver on thursday in terms of his plan? >> in terms of the plan we will hear him talk about the fact that he will press for measures that had bipartisan support in the past. this is a big theme for the white house, the kinds of initiatives he is proposing to increase job employment in this country, and they have had the support of republicans previously so should again. i know that we will have him talk about the importance of having a strong middle class for ec

dropped him at the university of michigan for debate camp for three weeks and thought he would be okay. wrong. he called me up two days later and felt dumb. he said the other kids at camp were far ahead of him and started yelling at me for not getting him in a better school. problem is, that he's already in the best school in our city. he says, i don't know what they're preparing us for but it's not college. my poor kid has discovered something we've known for years, not all school districts are created equal. there are at love factors for this, of course. but the one i find most telling is the correlation between poverty and academic achievement. according to the u.s. census bureau, grand rapids, michigan, has a 28.9% poverty rate amongst school age children. only 30% of students who take the michigan exam were proficient in math, 43% proficient in reading. when you look at the poorer cities in my state you'll find some numbers below 10%. conversely, the 10 wealthiest districts have scores in the mid 70s up to 90. how is that leaving no child behind? this correlation, not unique to mi

to the north is plooking in sol -- locking in solid rain. michigan and wisconsin and northern illinois and northern indiana into ohioch the thinks be -- ohio. system will move into our direction and put the brakes on. our forecast model here this is just one of many computer model. this one actually paring down on the lower end of our rain threat but that will be there back into the mountain later today. and that throws clouds our way. so we expect to have sun and a mix of high clouds eventually the sun will fade out but we should have temperatures warming up over the next few days. pulling in the south eastern wind ahead of the system. when we head into tomorrow morning, and give our take the time with a grain of salt there will be showers that do line up. we could wake up with some wet weather as we go through tomorrow morning. and while you will notice not much action around central maryland, through the forecast period on wednesday morning, i do expect we will be in the general range of scattered showers and because of that south eastern wind is piled up a flood watch at least alon

, and that is creating showers through northwestern pennsylvania all the way through detroit, michigan. we are still near this as we go throughout the day. we can't guarantee a completely dry forecast. lee has been impressive. widespread flooding reported over the last couple days. here's a -- what happened sunday through thursday with lee, and in the shadings of gray, that's nearly a foot-plus of rain that fell over areas like howard county and up toward baltimore county. now, this is an estimate. they are a little above normal, but we have seen wide-spread areas of 6 to 12 inches of rain. flood threats continue even though the worst of the rain has gone through. the susquehanna river is about eight feet above flood stage. the good news is, the river is starting to recede, but flood waters will take a while to recede. our next storm is tropical storm maria. she is heading off toward the west, and it's going to affect the lesser antilles. eventually she will start to head close to florida, and that's going to keep her in mind. if you are heading toward our coast this weekend, it is not too bad. especiall

a band of showers from the jersey shore all the way back toward detroit, michigan. this is mostly up to our north now, so we are starting off the day dry. however as we go throughout the day we could still see some of that moisture creep in, therefore there is the possibility of more showers and storms. that's the last thing we want to hear. we don't need any additional rain. we saw coastal flood advisories out to d.c. flood warnings continue for cecil and harford counties. along the susquehanna river which is still five feet above flood stage. although it has been receding. a couple feet have receded in the overnight hours. this is what we recorded from the remnants of lee. southern pennsylvania more than 15 inches. hunts valley, 10 inches. we saw a lot of localized areas anywhere between 6 to 12 inches throughout this event. throughout the day we are expecting dry weather at ocean city. a few clouds in the sky. clearer skies into the night with a few clouds. for tomorrow, the possibility for storms there. we have the big ravens game take ong the steelers tomorrow afternoon. there m

saw a fisherman try to catch a deer? father and son on a fishing trim in michigan -- trip in michigan. they see the fawn struggling, struggling. struggling. they pull the boat up to the pier and then the dad grabs the head of the deer and holds it above the water and then carefully lifts the deer on to the boat. they released the deer when they got to the shore and then probably did like a little check to make sure they didn't have any ticks on them. >> they do carry them. >> the son said you just let go of dinner. >> that's true. he might have done that. . the president travels to michigan. that's a state that's struggling with an unemployment rate over the national average. and look at detroit metro area. unemployment there is nearing 16%. kristen welker is live at the white house to give us a preview of what's to come. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, thomas. president obama won michigan back in 2008. he certainly wants to hold on to that state. those figures you mentioned aren't going to help his case. neither are the national numbers we got out on friday. of course, some really dismal jobs numbers which showed no net gain in jobs during the month of august. the unemployment rate remaining at 9. %. it gets even higher if you look at the african-american community where the rate is at 16.7%. republicans came out today. the republican national committee swinging saying on this labor day it is a reminder the president hasn't doesn't enough to stimulate job groelt and he's, in gaged in job-killing measures. the white house has pushed back against that saying we've created 2.4 million jobs. of course, we're going to have some head wi

michigan back in 2008. some really tough jobs numbers in that state as well. you mentioned the national numbers. if you look at michigan, 10.9% unemployment there. in detroit alone, the unemployment rate gets even higher. almost 16%. so those figures certainly aren't helping the president. a lot of people wondering what he's going to say today. white house officials tell me he'll be talking about the importance of the middle class to this recovery, and he will also be challenging democrats and republicans to get behind this big jobs plan that he's going to unveil on thursday. a lot of these union members have been pushing the president to go big on this jobs plan. will he? we'll have to wait until thursday to find out. but we'll be listening to see if we get a glimpse of what he's going to say on thursday today. craig. >> kristen welker at the white house for us this morning. thank you. >> reporter: thanks. >>> texas officials are calling for any and all firefighters around austin to report for duty. wildfires threaten entire neighborhoods there. strong winds pushed the flames across th
